North Durham Mutual Aid (Since March 2020, North Durham Mutual Aid has been organizing to help meet each other’s basic survival needs, recognizing that we cannot rely on the dominant institutions. We are an entirely volunteer-run collective. We will reply to you as soon as we can, but it may take us several days. For more about us, see: https://durhammutualaid.org/north/ )
Please join us on Saturday, December 10 at 11 am to noon for a rain barrel installation at our new garden site at 2700 North Roxboro Street (behind St. Paul’s United Methodist and the Sacred Grounds Coffeehouse.)
Let’s capture the rain that falls this winter and use it to irrigate our future garden. Come learn to do an installation if you don’t know how, and help us out with your expertise if you do!
After that, we’ll spend the winter designing the physical garden as well as the social systems to fully launch our Neighbors Growing Together Community Garden in the early spring.
It’s Luminary time! Northgate Park Neighborhood Association is sponsoring our annual luminaries in the park again this year! We’re excited to have this magical event on Sunday, December 11th, and we need your help to create some festive winter cheer!
We’re looking for neighbors to make the luminaries! Can you volunteer to make a set of 20 luminaries (or more than one set?) – adding sand and a candle to a paper bag – and then put them out around the park on the afternoon of December 11th? Come pick up a set of materials, take it home, and if you’re feeling creative, decorate the bags.
The packs are available in the gazebo behind 2500 Shenandoah Ave (with more detailed instructions). Please feel free to pick up a pack anytime during the daytime. There will be a sheet in the gazebo to sign to help us keep track. Be sure to take one bag each of sand, candles, and luminary bags to complete your set.
Want to help with the event?! We need volunteers to help with candle lighting the day of the event, clean up the day after, and general help the day of – iIf you’re able to volunteer for 30 minutes before or after the event, please take a moment to sign up at this link.
What will you be doing as a volunteer?Â
Before the event: lighting candles and checking that all bags have sufficient sand so they don’t blow over
After the event: cleaning up the bags
Want to decorate your own home? We also have limited luminary sets available for purchase. Please contact Kari to order a set of 10 luminaries for $10 (including the bags, sand, and candles). You can pay for a house pack using PayPal on the northgateparknc.org website (go to join/donate page) or mail a check to the NPNA Treasurer. Contact Kari for payment details and to set up delivery.
In case of rain, the rain date will be Sunday, December 18th.
